Description
Since the beginning of colony in 1840, Hong Kong has reclaimed land from the sea for its urban development. In its 1106 sq.km.- territory, around 70 sq.km. were reclaimed. More than 200 islands and peninsula make the coastline of 1100 km long. In the 20th century, reclamation along the Victoria Harbor pushed the shoreline thousand meter towards the sea. The man-made flat land provides opportunity of livable waterfront space and landscape design. This article aims to discuss two aspects of waterfront space. 1. Reclamation and its ecological and social disputes. Based on the background of reclamation, we further analyze the second aspect. 2. The historic evolution, shaping and design of waterfront space for commerce, leisure and civic activities. In addition to the beautification of waterfront space and architecture, the link from hinterland to waterfront also relates to good urban design. It is hoped that waterfront space can really contribute to a more active civil life.
