Description

3-day International Seminar “Technical Art History and Early Netherlandish Painting,” in collaboration with Dr. Maryan Ainsworth (Alvaro Saieh Curator Emerita of European Paintings, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), Advanced School of Art and Humanities, China Academy of Art, Hangzhou, onsite

How can knowledge of material aspects of paintings help with addressing art historical questions? What tools, (re)sources and expertise can art historians use to study the artists’ materials and working methods employed in a painting? This seminar aims to address these questions by introducing its participants into the interdisciplinary field of technical art history. It foremost seeks to provide insights into the field’s tools, methods and (re)sources by presenting research topics and case studies mainly from the field of Early Netherlandish Painting. The seminar will consist of lecture classes at the CAA and afternoon museum visits. As such, we will also explore how technical art history can be applied to Chinese art history by taking a closer look at objects in local museum collections.
