Description
AbstractEthnographic research involves collecting data that describe a culture. Especially important is understanding culture from the informants’ points of view. Ethnographic description and understanding can be a goal in and of itself, or can be the first step before quantitative and comparative studies. This seminar will introduce ethnographic methods including participant observation, person-centered interviewing, direct systematic observation of behavior, and cultural domain analysis.
Speaker Bio
Dr. Joseph BOSCO 林舟 is Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he was Graduate Divi-sion Head and taught the postgraduate methods seminar for 24 years until 2016. He is also a Research Associate at Washington University in St. Louis, USA, and co-editor of the journal Asian Anthropology. His re-search in economic anthropology and on religion focus-es on the cultural shaping of rationality. He has written on Mazu/Tin Hau temples, on Tam Kung processions and heritage in Hong Kong, and on CUHK ghost stories, on consumerism, as well as on underground lotteries. His current research is on pesticide use and misuse in Taiwan.
