DescriptionHumans are storytelling creatures. The stories they invent about machines define the machines themselves, endowing them with intelligence, sympathy, personality, and emotion. This talk examines the way artistic interventions involving machines with expressive gestures and personality influences the way we think and feel about them through three different examples: an shy but curious lamp, an expressive security camera, and a chess-playing robot arm. We explore the way art creates a platform for enriching and comprehending human perception by seeing the way they interact with machines that take on emotional character.
