Description

This paper presents research on a woman writer, Sheng Qinxian (1921-2017), who was the only female screenwriter during the Japanese occupation in Shanghai. A contemporary of Eileen Chang, Sheng's stories have been buried for decades until the publication of this paper. Her only film extant is Modern Women (1945), directed by Tu Guangqi, who erased her name from the credits. Her debut work, A Honorable Beggar (1944), inspired a later film titled The Life of Wu Xun (1950), which became the target of a political campaign in New China. Her writings record the living conditions of educated women in wartime China, which are still relevant today.
