Widely recognized as a successful tool for qualitative data analysis, NVivo is a powerful tool for uncovering richer and more insightful data. Dr Jack Pun, Assistant Professor at CityU’s Department of English’s conducted an interactive workshop with the Hospital Authority New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) on qualitative research and NVivo, a qualitative analysis computer software. Over 25 healthcare staff, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and management participated in this 3 hour long interactional workshop where they learn how to NVivo software to analyze data. The objectives of the workshop are to share the nature of qualitative research, procedures of analyzing qualitative data and the steps of using NVivo software to analyze data. Prior to the workshop, Dr Pun’s research team prepared a presentation, NVivo fact sheet and data file which contains a sample transcript for the step-by-step demonstration and activity sections. The workshop commenced with a brief introduction on what is qualitative research and data analysis, where Dr Pun invited participating frontline clinicians from departments such as Geriatric, as well as Accidents and Emergency (A&E) to share their experiences in conducting interviews and structured observations. The main section of the workshop, learning NVivo consists of demonstrations, video sharing and step by step instructions during the activities to guide the participants on utilizing the basic functions of NVivo, such as creating cases, coding techniques and reviewing the coding. Each participant brought along their own devices and NVivo software to gain a hands-on experience. Along with his research team, Dr Pun assisted the attendees in completing the activities and answered their queries. A few frontline clinicians had reached out to Dr Pun prior to the workshop to ask for feedback on their qualitative studies. At the end of the workshop, he invited the clinicians to share and elaborate their research, for instance an advanced practice nurse’s study on “Experience of patient with rheumatoid arthritis: A qualitative study of a nurse-led clinic in Hong Kong” and provided some feedback on how to enhance and improve their study design. Despite participants and the demonstrator having different versions of the NVivo with some interface dissimilarity, the team overcame it by going into the audience and assisting them one by one. The participants are all very eager to learn the software and qualitative research, and find the interactive workshop beneficial to their clinical research.| Period | 12 Aug 2021 |
