Description

Talk abstract: The Houston Asian American Archive has collected over 400 interviews of Asian Americans in greater Houston. Their stories are heroic, at times heart-breaking and heart-warming, but always inspiring. The presentation will offer a sweeping view of the stories of different Asian ethnicities who have made Houston their home, and how immigrants adapt to their new host society in broader terms.

Speaker info: Dr. Anne S. Chao received her B.A. from Wellesley College and her Ph.D. from Rice University. Her research interests include using computational techniques to do network analysis, text-mining and archival research on historical figures in the late Qing, early Republican China, as well as in the immigration history of Asian Americans to the south. At Rice University, Dr. Chao has taught courses and mentored students in the Program in Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities and in the Department of History. Currently she is Program Manager of the Houston Asian American Archive (https://haaa.rice.edu) at Rice University, which focuses on the immigration experience of Asian Americans to Houston. A transplant to Houston for almost forty years, she sits on the board of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Houston Ballet, Wellesley College, the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Arts and Science, the Dunhuang Foundation, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific Center and the National Archives Foundation.
