Description
The development of monomodal and multimodal Generative Artificial Intelligence (GneAI) tools is transforming and disrupting language teaching and learning. The sector is still struggling to understand the impact of these tools, how they might be utilized effectively to assist language teaching and learning, what knowledge and skills are needed to effectively use these tools, and how to navigate their generative potential with the risk of improper use. This requires an urgent response from researchers. Researchers must make GenAI research central to their research agendas to help the sector transition towards an AI age that best meets its needs. The community itself should lead this transformation, not big tech. In this workshop, I will share the work I and others have done exploring the impact of GenAI in language teaching and learning. I’ll identify key insights and what we already know about GenAI in language teaching and learning. I’ll then suggest priority research areas that need urgent attention. I’ll also discuss how we can disseminate our research findings to the field.
