Description
To many undergraduate students, the Capstone Project (CP) or Final Year Project (FYP) is a daunting task. It is often the longest piece of assignment that they write in English in their discipline. Faculty academics believe there is a need for English learning resources for CP/FYP; however, some universities in Hong Kong do not offer structured English training in the CP/FYP year. Many supervisors have had the experience of receiving nil response from students about their progress updates, and would like to connect with students via notifications and reminders. After discussions with some supervisors, a group of English teachers from five universities applied for a competitive UGC grant to develop an interactive mobile app that will contain English learning resources appropriate to discipline and project type for students to organize their project ideas and to learn the English that they can use at different stages of writing or presenting about their project. This colloquium describes the objectives of the app and the project’s progress to date. Participants will have the chance to see a pilot version of the app. The presenters will report preliminary results, including supervisees and supervisors’ wishlists for the app, and discuss some of the project’s benefits and challenges.
