Description
**This is an action-research component of my GRF 11404614. With extra funds from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, this component tackles: (1) Expanded Cinema as it is currently practiced in Hong Kong; and (2) ways to "open the black box" in media art where technological proceeds characterize a work but are not immediately perceivable to the spectators.
"Cinema Expanding: Visualising the Unseen" received a Hong Kong Arts Development Council's Media Art project grant to explore the current state of Expanded Cinema (1960s, 1970s) in the digital milieu as a research-driven curatorial project. A 18-month preparation process results in a 3-solo series, 30 Aug - 18 Nov 2018, exploring three different approaches to challenge the conventions of mainstream cinema. The 3 research-based exhibitions are: (1) "[G]Local Empathy System" by Ng Tsz-kwan, a successful multimedia experience designer in the commercial sector, (2) "Hidden Variables: Forking Paths of Visuality & Technology" on the use of mathematical concepts to open up spaces in moving image beyond the 3rd dimension by Hector Rodriguez, and (3) alternative moving image experiments through powering objects to move in space. The exhibition is the PI's response to her published essay on video arts in Hong Kong in the form of action research.
